Yesterday I went to see a bullfight here in Barcelona, “Gran Corrida de Toros”. It was a weird experience. There was a small protest outside the arena ( Plaza de Toros Monumental) about the cruelness of bullfighting. I have no problems with killing animals for food. Especially the hunters who shoots dears, rabbits, mooses, etc. does an important job for the nature to keep the amounts of animals in an reasonable amounts and keeps them from advancing too much to human populated areas or to let them die into diseases that would appear in too populated areas. The bullfighting in the other was for me very disturbing. To torture an animal and finally kill it when people are watching and cheering.

Of course I have to say that this was especially disturbing for me because I’ve lived in a totally different culture. If I’d have born in a culture where bullfighting is a historically important thing, it wouldn’t probably been disturbing but exciting. And you can’t really highlight the world historical too much when you’re talking about bullfighting. Living in Barcelona the two and a half hours I spent in the arena were probably the most Spanish in the sense of atmosphere I experienced in this city. People smoking cigars and drinking beer and all the historical rules and customs that are part of this sport, or should it be called a sport?
